No Meeting - Veterans Day
Thank you to all the men and women who have served our country.

At precisely 11:11 A.M., each Veterans Day (Nov. 11), the sun's rays pass through the ellipses of the five Armed Services pillars to form a perfect solar spotlight over a mosaic of The Great Seal of the United States.

The Anthem Veterans Memorial, located in Anthem, Arizona, is a monument dedicated to honoring the service and sacrifice of the United States armed forces.

The pillar provides a place of honor and reflection for veterans, their family and friends, and those who want to show their respects to those service men and women who have and continue to courageously serve the United States.

The memorial was designed by Anthem resident Renee Palmer-Jones.

The five marble pillars represent the five branches of the United States military.

They are staggered in size (from 17 feet to 6 feet) and ordered in accordance with the Department of Defense prescribed precedence, ranging from the United States Army, the United States Marine Corps, the United States Navy, the United States Air Force and the United States Coast Guard.

Around the District

Outland Award Luncheon and Dinner – Downtown Rotary has long been a partner in the annual Outland Award Luncheon and Dinner to recognize an outstanding college interior lineman.  This year’s luncheon will be on Wednesday, January 14, at D.J.’s Dugout, 10th Street and Capitol Avenue. Guests are welcome, but must be accompanied by a Rotarian.  The announcement will be made at the dinner being held on Thursday, January 15, at the Doubletree Hotel.  Reservations are required for either of these events.  The history of the award is very interesting, and information about the history, as well as both events, are included at http://www.omaharotary.org/outland/.  The announcement from Downtown Rotary is attached.

I hope you enjoyed the program on Monday about the Intertribal Powwow at MCC’s Fort Omaha Campus.  I encourage you to attend the Powwow on Saturday, September 13, anytime between 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.  It is a beautiful event!

Carolyn presented information about our upcoming Trails Cleanup project which the Club agreed to do during the morning on Saturday, September 13.  The exact time and directions to the start location will be provided later.  We agreed to clean up the trail from Dodge Park to OPPD in Northeast Omaha (2.6 miles).  Carolyn will have a sign-up sheet at the next couple of meetings.  Carolyn, please let me know if you need help picking up the things that will be provided for our use during the cleanup.  We earn $50 for the Club Treasury for doing this project.

Madeline talked about the wine-tasting fundraiser on the River City Star, which will occur on Sunday, September 21.  Madeline will have additional information about this event in the coming weeks, including a sign-up sheet so we know the numbers planning to attend.

The Younkers coupon books will be available in late September for us to sell during the month of October.  Remember that all proceeds come back to our Club.

September 18, 2014 – Nebraska Children’s Home Society is sponsoring a “Grandparents as Parents” free Conference on Thursday, September 18, 2014, 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m., St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church (93rd & Dodge).  See attached flyer.

October 4, 2014 -- Binational Health Week -- I will have more information in the near future; we may volunteer to help with health care promotion activities at this event on Saturday, October 4.

October 12, 2014 – Howling Monster Mash – When I attended the District Foundation & Membership Seminars last Saturday, I sat with a member of Omaha Suburban Rotary and visited about this event.  This is a 5K Run / 1-mile Walk / 50-yard “Kids Dash” that Omaha Suburban is sponsoring to raise money for Children’s Hospital and the fight against childhood obesity.  I’m attaching a Save-the-Date flyer, and I’ll visit with you about it at our September 8 meeting.  Please consider putting this event on your calendars for Sunday, October 12, at 11 a.m. at Rockbrook Village.  The cost will be $25 for ages 13 & up, $12 for ages 12 & under, and $5 for the 50-yard Kids Dash.  Suburban would like to have other clubs consider this event as a Rotary Day Event, and several of the Omaha area clubs are participating.  Please consider….and we’ll talk about this.

Good news!  The Oktoberfest was a success - see pictures on the photo album page (click the Oktoberfest photo album on the left side of the home page).  As of Thursday, we have raised more than $400 from the dinner on October 19.

The auction items from Wednesday night will be presented at Monday's Rotary luncheon/meeting for all who wish to participate.  We will close the auction on Monday.

Thank you for your support.  Also, I wish to thank everyone who participated in last night's dinner.  My husband and I had a wonderful time.  I didn't know German food could be so good.

Thanks to Charter Member Stan Kathol for a very informative program on the measures the Omaha Airport Authority is taking to keep Eppley open for business. Their efficient and proactive approach has protected infrastructure valued at billions of dollars. Not only that, but Eppley has a huge impact on the region's economy, and OAA efforts have saved millions of dollars in economic impact and hundreds of jobs while providing uninterrupted passenger and cargo service.  The OAA's planning and actions will be a model for other installations.  Kudos to OAA and their workers, tenants, and contractors for a job well done!

What is RYLA? Rotary International says…
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is an intensive training program that brings together youth to further develop character and leadership skills and learn about Rotary. RYLA programs often take the form of a seminar, camp, or workshop, generally 3-10 days in length, organized by Rotarians at the club, district, or multidistrict level.

Thanks to everyone (see picture) who helped with the cookout to benefit the Nebraska Children's Home!  Special thanks to Jerry for transporting the grills, and to Eli for securing the Walmart donation and for making an additional "hotdog run." Two non-Rotarians, Nora (our president's daughter) and Andrea (Eli's roommate from Colombia, South America), did an awesome job, and a good time was had by all, despite the heat! Some of us had the opportunity to tour their newly renovated facility, and I must say we were all quite impressed. They have many great programs, and this event brought members of the community together for a fun afternoon.

On July 11, we had a very successful Club Assembly to kick off the new Rotary year.  We welcomed new member Carolyn Kesick, and recognized two members with perfect attendance - Stan Kathol, 22 years, and Eli McNichols, 16 years.  Wow!

We also watched an inspiring video of new Rotary International President Kalyan Banerjee's speech, "Reach Within to Embrace Humanity."  He shares his vision for Rotary and service.  You can watch this video on the RI website.

Incoming president Madeline Madden announced the committees and their chairpersons:

-- Community Service - Michelle Marinella
-- New Generations - Susan Christopherson
-- Vocational Service - Jerry Kuehn
-- International Service (Rotary Foundation) - Julia Gold
-- Club Service - Stan Kathol
-- Sergeant-at-Arms - Larry McNichols
-- Fund-raising - Madeline Madden

Madeline wants anyone who's interested in helping with any of these committees to please contact her, or the committee chair.  Also, please email her with local or international project ideas.
